Diet Planning for weight gain


Do not force the child to eat, if on the growth curves the weight and height of the child are age and sex appropriate. Rule out medical causes like anemia, TB etc. 

  • Give more calories - Dates, Dry fruits, Jaggery, Groundnuts and Coconut etc. Protein-rich diet (e.g. Milk, eggs, sprouts, non-vegetarian food) is useful. 
  • Add ghee, butter in right proportions. Ensure plenty of fluids with salt and sugar. Fruits, dry fruits, vegetables and roots are the natural tonics! Eat liberally.
  • Changes in taste, color, flavor and presentation matter!
  • Go slow but consistently. 
  • Keep a diet-dairy.
  • Involve the child in diet-planning. SMS = Small Multiple Servings.
